A diary entry every day since 2/2/1891
I quote from the Kay Brothers winery website page ‘Our Story’
“The Amery property was purchased by Herbert and Frederick Kay in October 1890 and they officially came into possession on February 2nd 1891, as is noted in the diary commenced that day:
"Entered into possession at Amery.
514, 515, 516 & 740.
Rose, Bert, and Fred arrived about 6.30 (Rose was their sister)
Stock - Brown Horse "Darkie"
Roan Horse "Roanie"
4 swarms of bees
6 hens
Furniture per M. Webers wagon 9.45"
There is a meticulously kept diary for every year that the Kay Family has been at Amery. They give not only detailed vintage records and weather information, but also a host of day-to-day insights into the tremendous physical effort people put into working and living in those early days.”
This winery is in a beautiful location with sweeping lawns overlooking a broad valley. They hold events occasionally that cater to lovers of the other arts - music, theatre and the visual arts. I came once to a lovely lunch and Guitar Chamber Music Festival event in the 105-year old barrel hall that featured the world class Grigoryan brothers. Perfect atmosphere, acoustics, food and of course, wine! The Barrel Hall was also used for the famous art exhibition and art prize, the Fleurieu Biennale.

The images below show the latest involvement in the arts, the “Shimmer” photographic festival, which is held in a variety of venues and supported by the City of Onkaparinga. You also get a glimpse of the newly renovated cellar door which also has wall space dedicated to showing art. Below that is the stunning view over the valley, even on a miserable day you’d have to agree it’s incredible. Finally, and just for fun, I’ve included the first painting I sold from the calendar series, in situ, at the owners’ home where it fits comfortably with the other ‘real’ barrels!
